The Machame Route

The Machame Route – 6 & 7 Days Overview

Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its reputation as a more challenging yet incredibly rewarding climb, the Machame Route is one of the most popular ways to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. This scenic trail offers diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest and moorlands to alpine deserts and the breathtaking glaciers near the summit. With its gradual acclimatization profile and dramatic vistas, Machame is considered one of the most beautiful routes on the mountain.

The 6-day itinerary is designed for strong trekkers seeking a faster ascent, while the 7-day option provides an extra day for acclimatization, increasing summit success rates. Both versions follow the same trail, beginning at Machame Gate and winding through iconic landmarks such as Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, and the Great Barranco Wall, before reaching Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa.

Whether you choose the 6-day or 7-day journey, the Machame Route promises an unforgettable adventure, blending physical challenge with awe-inspiring scenery and the thrill of standing atop Kilimanjaro’s summit.
