Tour Itinerary
Your day begins with a comfortable pick-up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. You’ll enjoy a scenic drive through the unique landscapes surrounding Kilimanjaro, heading towards the private conservation area where Lake Chala is located. As you approach, you’ll begin to appreciate the stark beauty of the volcanic terrain.
Upon arrival at the Lake Chala gate, your guide will handle all necessary entry formalities, and you’ll receive a brief introduction to the lake’s geological history and ecological significance. From the reception area, you’ll embark on a picturesque hike down into the caldera. The path winds through diverse vegetation, eventually leading you to the shimmering turquoise waters at the bottom of the crater. This descent offers increasingly spectacular views of the lake’s vibrant colors and the dramatic surrounding cliffs.
Once at the lake shore, you’ll have ample time to relax and soak in the serene atmosphere. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Chala are inviting, and you are welcome to enjoy a refreshing swim in designated safe areas. For those who wish, there’s often an opportunity for a peaceful kayaking experience on the tranquil lake, allowing for a unique perspective of its beauty. Your guide will also lead you on gentle nature walks along the lake’s edge, where you can observe the diverse flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for various bird species, playful monkeys, and even baboons that frequent the area. The unique location on the border means you’ll have views stretching into both Tanzania and Kenya from different points around the crater rim.
After a relaxing and exploratory time by the lake, you’ll enjoy a delicious packed lunch, usually enjoyed at a scenic spot overlooking the water or within the shaded areas near the lake.
Following your lunch and final moments of tranquility, you’ll begin your ascent back up the crater rim. While a bit more strenuous than the descent, the views remain rewarding.
